Vitamin E is required in most cosmetic formulations in very small amounts in order to prevent oils from oxidizing. Â Vitamin E oil is also heat stable, and is added during the oil phase of your recipes.
Great for using in lotions, body butters, massage oil, hair products, lip balms and creams.
Oil is sold by volume.

Not a preservative, Vitamin E is instead a powerful antioxidant which keeps lipids from
degenerating. Antioxidants are agents that also neutralize the oxidant effect of free
radicals, which are basically molecules that not only damage collagen (thus causing
skin dryness, fine lines and wrinkles), but trigger immune-system responses.
Adding 0.5% Vitamin E Oil to carrier oil will sustain the oil itself, preventing it from
breaking down at its natural rate. To both extend the shelf-life of the oil and add benefits
to the skin, a minimum of 2% Vitamin E to a max of 30% of the formulation must be
used.
Vitamin E exists in eight different forms, four tocopherols and four tocotrienols. All
feature a chromanol ring, with a hydroxyl group that can donate a hydrogen atom
to reduce free radicals, and a hydrophobic side chain which allows for penetration
into biological membranes. Both the tocopherols and tocotrienols occur in alpha, beta,
gamma and delta forms.
INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT VITAMIN E
Vitamin E was discovered in 1922 by Herbert McLean Evans and Katharine Scott Bishop.  The first use for vitamin E as a therapeutic agent was conducted in 1938 by Widenbauer, who used wheat germ oil supplement on 17 premature newborn infants suffering from growth failure. Eleven of the original 17 patients recovered and were able to resume normal growth rates.  In 1945, Drs. Evan V. Shute and Wilfred E. Shute, siblings from Ontario, Canada, published the first monograph arguing that megadoses of vitamin E can slow down and even reverse the development of atherosclerosis.  Later, in 1948, while conducting experiments on alloxan effects on rats, Gyorge and Rose noted rats receiving tocopherol supplements suffered from less hemolysis than those that did not receive tocopherol.  Since then, supplementation of infant formulas with vitamin E has eradicated this vitamin’s deficiency as a cause for hemolytic anemia.
