Shilajit is one of the most revered tonics on earth for rejuvenation, which is why it is referred to as the conqueror of mountains and destroyer of weakness.  This fascinating herbal substance known as shilajit has profound effects on the physical body and mind including the purported capability of life extension! This thick, blackish-brown, sticky substance is made from plants and organic matter that have been trapped by many layers of rocks over millions of years in the areas surrounding India, China, Tibet, Nepal, Pakistan, Central Asia and Scandinavia. The extreme variations of hot and cold weather combined with the massive pressure from the weight of the mountains creates the mineral rich matter to flow out of the rocks.  Shilajit also known in the north of India as salajit, shilajatu, mimie, or mummiyo is a blackish-brown powder or an exudate from high mountain rocks, especially in the Himalayans mountains between India and Nepal, although it has been also found in Russia, Tibet, Afghanistan, and now in the north of Chile, named as Andean Shilajit . What exactly is Shilajit?

Shilajit is a natural substance found mainly in the Himalayas, formed for centuries by the gradual decomposition of certain plants by the action of microorganisms. It is a potent and very safe dietary supplement, restoring the energetic balance and potentially able to prevent several diseases.  Shilajit is a blackish brown rock exudate that is found in some mountain ranges in the 1000-5000m height range, and known to be cultured in the Himilayan and Hindukush ranges, used in Ayurveda medicine as a vitality enhancer and adaptogen compound with historically ‘miraculous’ effects. Possibly because of these effects attributed to it, it was named Shilajit; Shilajit translates from Sanskrit meaning Conqueror of mountains and destroyer of weakness.  Traditionally, shilajit is consumed by people from Nepal and the North of India, and children usually take it with milk in their breakfast. The Sherpas claim to have shilajit as part of their diet; they constitute a population of strong men with very high levels of a healthy longevity.

Fulvic acid is required to dilate the cell walls and transport the minerals deep into the cells.” What he means by dilation of the cell walls is that fulvic acid increases intracellular mineral concentrations via facilitated transport. If we can’t absorb the vitamins and minerals that enter our body, our tissues become deficient and we lack energy, both physical and mental. These deficiencies may speed up the aging process also known as senescence. Fulvic acid allows the 85+ minerals from shilajit to enter into the cells of the body rapidly and can “effectively prolong cell life and keep it healthy for a very long time.

Recent investigations point to an interesting medical application toward the control of cognitive disorders associated with aging, and cognitive stimulation. Thus, fulvic acid, the main active principle, blocks tau self-aggregation, opening an avenue toward the study of Alzheimer’s therapy. Considering the expected impact of shilajit usage in the medical field, especially in the neurological sciences, more investigations at the basic biological level as well as clinical trials are necessary, in order to understand how organic molecules of shilajit and particularly fulvic acid, one of the active principles, and oligoelements act at both the molecular and cellular levels and in the whole organism.

Shilajit was known by Himalayan villagers to increase sex drive, in addition to its other benefits. The villagers observed monkeys chewing shilajit from layers of rock. Attributing the monkeys’ strength and longevity to the shilajit, the villagers began to eat it themselves. Improvements in health and memory accompanied an increase in libido, according to villagers’ reports.
