KOMBO BUTTER 100% Pure Unrefined from GHANA

Kombo butter or Kombo oil is produced from the seeds of a tropical tree Pycnanthus angolensis ( often referred to as African nutmeg). Called “otie” by the Akans in Ghana, the Kombo trees reach 120 feet in height, growing in Central and West Africa.The kernel nut shell surrounds a red mace, with a similar taste to that of nutmeg, but sweeter and more delicate. When added to food it gives a bright orange colour. Resembling those of nutmeg, the seeds are surrounded by a red mace. This aril of the nutmeg seed is rich in magnesium, copper, manganese phosphorus, calcium and chromium as well as niacin, riboflavin, thiamine and carotene. Using a rudimentary mechanical pressing technique, the seeds are pressed along with the mace yielding a brown to reddish brown dense oil known as Kombo butter. The seeds are harvested between December and April and the butter is prized for its anti-inflammatory properties. The “waste” after the oil has been pressed from the seeds is used as fire lighters and also as natural fertilizer. Freshly imported directly from Ghana.

The rich, unrefined butter has a unique, dark, chocolate-brown colour with hues of deep burgundy and dark blue. Its aroma is both fruity and earthy, reminding some of burnt caramel or chocolate. Like the fat of nutmeg, kombo butter is mostly myristic acid, with a high amount of myristoleic acid, as well. It contains the unique compound kombic acid, which was named for the tree under its nomenclatural synonym, P. kombo. Kombo nut is comprised of about 75 % of trimyristin – a myristic acid derivative which is used in the treatment of arthritis, various joint and muscle ailments, has strong anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties and it is effective in the treatment several inflammatory diseases. It also contains Decorin, a protein known for its ability to regulate the production of collagen improving the condition and appearance of the skin as well as stimulates the healing process of muscles injuries.

Local names include pó casson in São Tomé and Príncipe, gboyei in Sierra Leone and Liberia, otie in Ghana, eteng in Cameroon, lolako in Zaire, and adria, effoi, hétéré, qualélé, and walélé in Ivory Coast.
