Traditional Use: For centuries zdravetz has been a part of Bulgarian folk tradition as a symbol of health and long life, prosperity and youth.

Properties: aphrodisiac, anti-catarrh, anti-infectious, antispasmodic, carminative, diaphoretic, febrifuge, antidepressant, sedative, stimulating, hypertension, hypotension.

How to Use:  Inhalation, Diffusion, Topically.

Blends well with: Rose, Lavender, Roman Chamomile, Geranium, Juniper, Ylang Ylang, Clary Sage, oakmoss, citrus oils.

Safety:  Avoid while pregnant. Not intended for internal use.

HISTORY OF USE

Zdravetz (True Geranium) is a small perennial plant which grows on rocky soil in medium to high altitudes and is a very important part of Bulgarian traditions.  Used for many centuries, it has a reputation as a strong aphrodisiac in the Balkans region.

The exact geographical origin of the plant is unknown, but presently it is found mostly in the temperate zone of the northern hemisphere, especially on the Balkan peninsula.  It grows in dark, shady, rocky spots in almost all Bulgarian mountains, between 1000 and 8300 feet above sea level.

Zdravetz contains up to 0.15% essential oil.  The plant also contains flavonoids, phenolic acids, pigments, vitamins, mineral salts and others.  The main component of the essential oil is sesquiterpene ketone germacrone (50-65%).  At room temperature the oil is a mixture of liquid and crystalline matter.  The aromatic substances are contained in the liquid part, while the purified solid part is odorless.

It is no coincidence that the old Bulgarians gave this plant the wonderful name zdravets, which means “bringer of health”.  (The stem “zdrave” means “health” in Bulgarian).  In English, zdravets is known as Cranesbill or True Greranium.

Zdravetz essential oil (Geranium macrorrhizum) is an excellent oil that has been little explored, partly because of its somewhat restricted availability and partly because of its relatively high cost.

It is light yellow to pale olive solid waxy mass, with a sweet, woody, herbaceous aroma and subtle floral notes.  It is an oil possessing excellent fixative properties and it blends well with a wide range of materials-both excellent virtues for folks engaged in natural perfumery.

In perfumery its excellent fixative effect and subtle aromatic qualities can be used to great advantage in chypres, fougeres, Oriental bases, colognes, rose bases, precious woods notes, herbal perfumes, geographical perfumes.  Zdravets Essential Oil is a Geranium oil which offers a rich, herbaceous, earthy, sweet-woody aromatic scent with a warm roseaceous undertone. Zdravets is one of a set of unique essential oils which is a solid waxy, crystalline mass at room temperature. This essential oil possesses excellent fixative properties and has an aroma that melds well with a wide range of materials – both excellent virtues for folks engaged in natural perfumery.

Zdravetz Essential Oil, Bulgaria, is sweet woody and floral with clary sage and tobacco undertones this is an amazing essential oil.  Although Zdravets easily solidifies, the solids are easily dissolvable in other essential oils.  Zdravets oil is a must for perfumery.  The latin meaning of Macrorrhism is “big root” and the name “zdrave” means “health.”  In eastern and central Europe the oil is distilled as a medicinal herb.  However, the yield is extremely small.  Furthermore the essential oil is usually distilled only when orders are already placed.  Paraffins in this essential oil cause it to be solid at room temperature and these paraffin crystals serve as excellent fixatives in perfumes.  Likely they would serve the same purpose in high value aromatherapy blends.  Since distillations of Zdravetz are rare and of very low yield it is wise to acquire it when possible.

HEALTH BENEFITS

Zdravetz essential oil has antiseptic, antispasmodic, anti-allergic, astringent and capillary strengthening qualities.  It lowers the blood pressure in hypertension sufferers, due to its flavonoid content.  It can also lower the level of blood sugar in diabetics.
In addition, zdravetz oil can relieve menopause symptoms, stimulate the blood vessels and relieve insomnia and fatigue.  Used on the skin, zdravets oil is helpful against itching, skin lesions, furuncles and hemorrhoids.

The cosmetic uses of zdravetz oil are also valuable, as it is known to have a bleaching effect and can clear pigmented spots and blemishes on the face and skin.  It is also good for removing wrinkles and refreshing the eye areas. In perfumery, zdravets oil is used to add exotic nuances and is an excellent fixative.

Zdravets oil crystallizes at room temperature, therefore it must be liquefied before blending. The by-products of Zdravets oil distillation are a valuable organic compost, rivalling manure as a fertilizer.
