Essential Oil Spike Lavender

The Essential Oil of Spike Lavender is steam-distilled from the flowering tops of Lavandula latifolia.  The oil and plant of spike lavender are used in similar ways to Lavandula angustifolia or true lavender. Spike lavender oil is also used throughout the fragrance industry: specifically soap making.  Spike Lavender Essential Oil is similar in usage to that of Lavender angustifolia or Lavender officianalis. However, it contains significantly more camphor.

Spike Lavender (Lavandula latifolia) is native to France, Spain, Italy and the Balkans. The plant grows at lower altitudes than ‘true’ Lavender and has a very high yield, making it an inexpensive oil to produce. Spike Lavender is therefore most commonly used in less expensive lavender products.  Sharper and fresher aroma than ‘true’ lavender.

HISTORY OF USE

Superficially it resembles ‘true’ Lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia) but it has a more camphorous aroma and is quite different in terms of its chemistry and therapeutic application.

According to the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia, Spike Lavender was traditionally used for headaches, rheumatic pain, colic and dyspepsia. In modern aromatherapy Spike Lavender essential oil shares some of ‘true’ Lavender’s properties, however it is slightly stronger and should be used more sparingly.

Spike Lavender is a kinder, softer eucalyptus in that it has the properties of eucalyptus, decongests and soothes aching tired muscles. It is more antiseptic than other lavenders and used in hand soap and wound healing. Spike lavender is more robust than true lavender and its scent also seems to be more aggressive or harsh.
