A perennial herb growing to 3ft high with hollow leaves and a globe flowering stem that produce a fleshy bulb, onion is very well known for its tasty contribution to the culinary world, but its aiding properties have been left out of the lime light. Onion pure essential oil has a distinct onion aroma but also is known for its anti-bacterial, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, and hypnotic assets. Onion essential oil has a sulfurous type odour.

HISTORY OF USE

During historical times, onion was a very popular vegetable in ancient Egypt. A lot of money was spent on onions to feed builders of the Egyptian pyramids. In the later part of the middle ages onion (because of its strong smell) was used as a charm against the plague. The sulfur compounds in onions give them a sharp aroma and flavor, which made folk healers think they were indications that onion juice could prevent infection. Modern herbal practitioners believe that applications of onion will kill off warts and preventacne.* They also recommend onion syrup as an expectorant. Onions are believed to be diuretic.* Onion oil is basically a superlative tonic, as it is rich in vitamins, including B2 (riboflavin), B1 (thiamine), and C.
