HISTORY OF USE
Coffee beans originate from the coffee trees that were originally discovered in Ethiopia. Soon after that, people on the Arabian peninsula started to cultivate the plant. Later on, the seeds were brought to India, Java, Sumatra, Guyana, Brazil, Jamaica, Cuba, Guatemala, Costa Rica, etc. Coffee’s popularity kept growing and more countries joined the long list of coffee growers. Today, Colombia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Mexico, Peru and Honduras play major roles in the world’s coffee production. Coffee is now one of the world’s most valuable and widely traded crops, and in several countries it is an important export product. Coffee is one of the world’s most widely consumed beverages.
Over 60 varieties (mostly from species Coffea robusta and Coffea arabica) are grown all over the world. The beautiful coffee plant is an evergreen flowering tree (or shrub) from the Rubiaceae family (gardenia is part of the family as well!) and native to Africa and the tropical regions of Asia. It is so unfair that when we talk about the aroma of coffee, we completely forget about the plant’s flowers. These small (mostly white) stars smell amazing!
