Essential Oil Citronella

Aroma: Citronella oil has a slightly sweet, lemony smell. A top note of medium aroma, Citronella has a well-rounded lemony scent, though it is much softer and has subtle wood tones.

Traditional Use: Although this essential oil has been typecast as an insect repellent, it has great benefit in clearing the mind, refreshing rooms and for softening skin, while combating oily skin and sweaty feet.

Properties: antiseptic, bactericidal, deodorant, diaphoretic, insecticide, parasitic, tonic and stimulant.

How to Use: Diffuser, Spray, Cotton Rub

Blends well with: bergamot, geranium, lemon, orange, lavender and pine.

Safety: Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAS). Citronella oil may irritate sensitive skin and cause dermatitis in certain individuals.

HISTORY OF USE

Citronella is a cousin of lemongrass, both species of Cymbopogon. Citronella oil is one of the essential oils obtained from the leaves and stems of different species of Cymbopogon (lemongrass). The oil is used extensively as a source of perfumery chemicals such as citronellal, citronellol and geraniol. These chemicals find extensive use in soap, candles and incense, perfumery, cosmetic and flavouring industries throughout the world.

Citronella Oil is extracted from a resilient grass native to Sri Lanka and Java. It is a very aromatic perennial that grows approximately 1 meter (3 feet) in height. It is often used in combination with Cedarwood to produce pleasant-smelling patio candles and torches.

Antidepressant: This oil fights depression and gives relief from anxiety, sadness, and negative feelings. It induces a fresh, happy feeling and hope.

A Few Words of Caution: There is no inherent toxicity in the essential oil, but it has been seen to produce irritation, dermatitis or sensitization in skin if used in high concentrations. It should not be used on the skin of small children and should be avoided during pregnancy.

Blending: The essential oil of citronella forms fine blends with the essential oils of cedar wood, clary sage, eucalyptus, geranium, lavender, lemon, peppermint and rosemary and tea tree.
