Essential Oil Chamomile Roman

Chamomile Roman (Chamaemelum nobile) is one of the most popular herbs in the Western world. Roman Chamomile comes from northwestern Europe and Northern Ireland, where it creeps close to the ground and can reach up to one foot in height. Gray-green leaves grow from the stems, and the flowers have yellow centers surrounded by white petals, like miniature daisies. Traditionally, Roman chamomile has been used to treat nausea, vomiting, heartburn. Roman chamomile is used in aromatherapy for its skin benefiting properties, and it adds a calming aspect to a blend, which may help in times of tension. It is often used today to relieve anxiety. Used on the skin, it may also reduce inflammation from cuts. Studies have shown that chamomile can kill bacteria, fungus, and viruses. It also helps relax muscle contractions, particularly in the smooth muscles that make up the intestines.

Blends well with:  Clary sage, Eucalyptus, Geranium, Grapefruit, Jasmine, Lavender, Lemon, Rose, Tea tree.

Safety:  Generally safe, however it is best to avoid if pregnant.

HISTORY OF USE

One of the most relaxing and comforting essential oils of all, Roman Chamomile resonates with people to create an inner peace and harmony. Chamomile is so gentle, it can be used by the whole family to treat a variety of physical and emotional illnesses including stress, insomnia, anxiety and skin conditions.

The fragrance of Chamomile Roman Essential Oil is sweet, and floral, with a very clean scent, blending well with almost any other floral oils and all of the citrus oils. Try it at just a drop, or two, to about 10 mls, of any blend, and it will bring out the apple note, contributing a clean scent. Bringing out the apple note requires using it at very low dilution.

Health

Roman chamomile essential oil is one of the most versatile of all oils used in aromatherapy, coming only second to our beloved lavender. It is powerfully soothing and calming oil which imparts this quality to both physical and emotional conditions alike. Although more expensive than lavender, a little goes a long way with this oil and its calming and sedating properties will out-perform lavender any day of the week.

During the hay fever season Roman chamomile essential oil offers some welcome relief to sufferers when inhaled from a tissue due to its anti-allergen effect. It offers similar relief to allergic rhinitis and dust allergy sufferers, bringing soothing comfort to irritated and inflamed nasal passages.

Chamomile oil and a few others were commonly used until the Second World War as natural disinfectants and antiseptics in hospitals and surgeries. The antiseptic power of the plant and its oil is said to be 120 times that of sea or salt water.

A few drops of the essential oil can be added to a warm bath to remove weariness and ease pain in any part of the body. Such a fragrant bath could also be a tonic for children and old people who have been ill.

Chamomile is one of the gentlest essential oils, and so is ideal for use with children: a drop of the essential oil mixed with a dessert spoon of grapeseed oil and put on an index finger can safely be massaged into the gums of a fretful teething baby for relief.

Cosmetic

Chamomile oil can be mixed with others to make facial oils for many types of skin, and chamomile infusions make a good tonic cleanser for dry skin. Chamomile facial saunas are good too for many skin problems.

Chamomile is most famed for its use in hair preparations. It is used commercially in shampoos for fair hair. Use an infusion as a final rinse for fair hair.

Massage

For general aches and pains, rub in a mixture of 10 ml (2 tsp) Grapeseed oil, 2 drops Camphor White oil and 4- drops Chamomile Roman oil after a bath.
