Tonka Bean Absolute Oil (5 mL)
Tonka Bean absolute is one of the most highly-sought after ingredients for the composition of natural perfumes due to its unrivaled ability to not only act as a fixative, but also to add a superior touch of notes to the finest perfumes. The absolute is obtained from Dipteryx odorata, a large tropical tree native to Brazil, Guyana, and Venezuela, and also cultivated in Nigeria and elsewhere in West Africa.
Tonka Bean Absolute is not recommended for therapeutic purposes. It is intended for use in perfumery only. Naturally occurring coumarin in Tonka Beans is considered safe for dermal use, and is not carcinogenic, not phototoxic, and not an allergen; this, however, is not the case with synthetic coumarin and coumarin derivatives.
HISTORY OF USE
From the very first fragrances made for men, the synthetic version of tonka bean absolute, coumarin, has introduced warm notes in chypres, fougères, ‘new mown hay’ bases, Oriental bases, Lavender bouquets, and others. Prior to the availability of synthetic coumarin, tinctures of Tonka Beans were long used as a source of natural coumarin, the compound responsible for the beans’ sweet, vanilla-like aroma. The beans are no longer used for food and beverage flavouring since the FDA banned the use of coumarin in such products in the U.S. in 1954, however, coumarin is still used to flavor tobacco in a number of countries.
