Narcissus Absolute Oil (5 mL)
Many absolutes are merely intoxicating fragrances meant for use in perfumery alone – not so with Narcissus! A flower of the gods, Narcissus absolute offers a bouquet of healing benefits wrapped in a delectable fragrance that’s both delicate and rich, sweet and herbaceous. Extraordinarily rare and difficult to obtain, Narcissus Poeticus is very rarely offered since the narcissus fragrance is used almost exclusively in high class perfumes and lotions.
Opening with surprisingly green, herbaceous notes, narcissus absolute (from Narcissus Poeticus) possesses creamy floralcy reminiscent of tuberose absolute, but layered with far more greenery reminiscent of mint, hay and tomato leaf absolute. There’s something dirty and slightly repulsive about it – almost like a heap of rotting garden weeds. The dryout is reminiscent of hay, and is a tad powdery. Still bears a strong resemblance to tomato leaf absolute but softer.
HISTORY OF USE
The Arabians considered it an aphrodisiac, and in India the oil is applied to the body before prayer in temples along with rose, sandalwood and jasmine.
It is not only its price that determines the value of Narcissus absolute, but also the olfactory quality, and these factors determine the success of a perfume. The absolute is almost a perfume by itself. Its scent is rich and complex. In it, one can sometimes be reminded of the elusive fragrance of iris, rose, jasmine, tuberose, ylang, orange blossom, and oak moss.

There is perhaps no Greek myth better known than the tale of Echo and Narcissus, so it follows suit that Narcissus poeticus remains one of the rarest, most sought-after absolutes in all the world. The scent of this absolute conjures forest-green scenes set against deep earthy foliage.
Who would think that such a sweet, fresh fragrance would also contain significant healing powers?
Beautiful though this white daffodil is, there is a certain transcendental, even ghostlike quality about it. The pale white petals surrounding the dark eye at the centre of the star-shaped flower is reminiscent of a disembodied eye. The story of Narcissus is sad indeed: a beautiful youth, much adored by every nymph of the forest, had neither eyes nor ears for any of their heartfelt pleas. He was so vain and self-absorbed that he never even noticed their pain until one day he passed a clear spring and caught a glimpse of a beautiful youth – and hopelessly fell in love with his own image. In the end he could not bear the heartache any longer and died in a tight embrace with the watery reflection of himself. The strange white flower that sprang up where he had died was named after him. The word ‘Narcissus’ in Greek derives from ‘narkeo’, meaning ‘narcotic’. The unfortunate youth had died of intoxicating self-love that made him blind to all other love and beauty in the world. Narcissus is indeed intoxicating and can powerfully affect the nervous system. The enchanting scent is mostly used in high class perfumery. Extreme care must be taken when working with this oil.
Caution: Â NEVER USE INTERNALLY.
